I am thinking sometime that I'd like to get my Snapper running again as the one currently on it is shot.  It appears to be a '79 model that has been in the family for a bit of time.  I am looking for a very good replacement engine for it.  The mower model number is V212P, and the engine model is 92908, type 1826-01, and code 78121108.  I have looked at the Briggs Quantum I/C and I like that engine, but am not sure if it would fit on the mower.  I don't like having to drill holes in the frame, but if that means a better engine I'll do that.  I don't want to put too much money into the engine though.  I will definitely need electric start or the Prime'N Pull system found on the Quantum.   It seems that I'd get more starting from the electric start if  I ever had to crank for and extended period of time.  Can the Quantum's or the other engine that supersedes this one be fitted with electric start?

I am certainly not an expert in snapper engine replacements, but according too Briggs the 122k02-0015 is the replacement engine for that.
You will have too do a search too see exactly what features that engine has. (I am assuming it is an electric start version.)
Engine mounting bolt pattern is not a problem.....that is pretty universal.
One concern of mine would be chute interference.
We have stuck IC's on snappers before...but the V212P is a pretty old unit. (1978) 27 years old is real old.
The off the shelve Quantam replacement engines are cheaper than the specific Briggs recommended units...but you can run into problems like crank length and diameter. (New SP pulley and belt.)
I see quite a few of these replacement engines on snappers...but I really dont see what is too be gained from doing it.
But......that's your call.

Hi Guys!

Just replaced the  engine in my old Snapper 210P with a 2 stroke Tecumseh  TV840XL. Fits like a glove. No issues at all!!

Shaft is 7/8" by 3 5/32" just like the original. The XL in TV840XL stands for "extra life". Cast Iron bore ,huge paper air filter,solid state ignition. The drive pulley and blade adapter switch over from the old engine. The blade brake can be defeated by simply taking off the return spring and locking the arm in the run position with a self tapping screw. My buddy suggested hooking up the kill wire to a toggle switch from radio shack which should take about 5min.

I bought the engine from Small Engine Warehouse as a scratch and dent model. The engine was in gorgeous condition with only a rub mark in the black paint on the shroud. Couldn't even describe it as a dent. No original carton but it came beautifully boxed with form fitting solid foam protection. I called Tecumseh and they sent me an owners manual no charge.

The engine was pricey at $200 but where are you going to get an aluminum deck self propelled 21" for that kind of money? Like the man says after 31 years "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickn' ".

AJace- Just checked the Small Engine Warehouse site and did not see the 5hp TVXL listed. The one that they now list is a 4HP with a shorter shaft than you need and it is 25mm rather than 7/8". Call them if you are interested and ask for the 5hp one that fits the Snapper. they had 2 left as of last week.This is not an engine that is adaptable to electric start. I have not seen too many vertical shaft engines in the 7hp and under range with electric start. The ones I have seen don't plug in to AC current like the snow blowers. I find that the solid state pull start engines are very reliable. Come to think of it so are the old style points, condenser and magneto engines. Most of the time I find starting problems are carb related.

The actual mower is in good shape.  It recently had the drive system worked on.  Marty, the number I pulled up looks like a Quantum, I found one @ Northern Tool for about $230 including shipping.   It's not the I/C engine, though.  I will probably buy the I/C for better performance, plus I think it looks better.    Looks like $248 for the I/C, and $50 more for the electric start model.  I didn't see any engine @ Northern Tool that had the Prime'N Pull start on them.  I'll email Small Engine Warehouse and see what their price on the I/C with electric start will be. 
It seems that the Tecumseh 2 cycles are better than their regular 4 cycle.  They seem to run louder and without the ability for electric start, I think that option is out.  Thanks to both of you doing some research for me on this.   

Northern Tool is having a Big Deal on one of their engines.   The model number of the engine in question is 123K02-0015-E1.  It seems that is basically the same engine, but with 6.5 vs. 5.0.  I'd really like a I/C but I think compression & valve jobs are more frequent on those?

I was speaking to some engine repair guys in my area and they agreed that the B&S Quantom engine should fit on your mower. Let me know when you are going to buy it!
