Maintence on hedge trimmers
Original Message   Apr 24, 2005 8:35 pm
Hey guys right now i have a cheap pair of weedeater clippers they are gas powered 22inch bar. What kind of oil should you put on the bar? Also what is the best way to sharpen these or can you? The reason I'm asking this is beacuse I think in the near future i'm going to be buying a new pair most likely  the Echo SHC210 I was gonna post a picture of them but Echos page is down right now. I have picked up a few new yards with alot of hedge trimming so I really need to upgrade thanks Mike

Mike,
I just oil mine with the oil can when it slows down. They are cheap cheap Craftsman electric. I don't worry about if grit would stick to the oil and wear them out. Because they are worn out. When you go by the shop maybe look at the owners manual of a new set and see what it says. It should have some recommended preventive maintainance. Since you have time maybe send Echo an email. Sorry about the no help.

Mike, like Rob said!

I do it the wrong way I'm sure. I just use a little 3-in-1 oil, once some Dura-lube houshold oil I had, and have been known to use WD-40 too. Let us know what you find out.

I occasionally seperate my 2 halves and hold them face down on a belt sander to remove any nicks or burrs.  Then lightly oil.  Im sure you could take a small dremel tool wheel and sharpen each inlet, but thta would be alot of work, and mine hasn't merrited that yet.  I usually wipe w/ some Marvel mystery oil, or any gun oil, after wards, to wart off the rust for storage more than anything.

I hose down the blades after use then liberally spray it with wd40. Used to use oil but noticed the grit build up so switched to this method. Also always wondered what the oil did to the plants.

Sharpening, Take em to a shop.

But as far as Oil, use regular Pam, the cooking spray. it will keep sap from gumming up and sapping power. it works. Its all I use on my Stihl.

to sharpen them, just seperate the 2 blades and use a fine flat metal file and file at the same angle that is there. file in one direction from the base to the edge of the blade.
