When the Dyson DC21 Stowaway canister was introduced to independent dealers in March of 2007, I immediately set out to my nearest Dyson dealer to see if they had received any as I did not have a Dyson yet, and wanted this electric power nozzle-equipped machine since I had heard it was being launched. Luckily they had just received their shipment of DC21s and I bought one that day.
I couldn't wait to get it out of the box and try it out. After extending the telescoping wand, I ran the power nozzle across the rug (which I had just vacuumed with my Hoover previously) and picked up a surprising amount of fine dust, grit, and sand that had been trapped below the surface. I then moved to my mattress (which I also vacuum weekly when I change sheets) to clean it and sure enough, more powdery dust wound up in the bin. And, true to its claim, there was no suction loss the entire time. Fine dust of this type would surely clog a bagged machine, if not immediately then eventually. The amount it picked up was impressive the first time around, but it continued to amaze me on subsequent occasions in high-traffic areas with either carpet or area rugs. The bare floor brush is great as well, wide so the job gets done quicker and has staggered bristles in the front. Does a fantastic job on the laminate and tile, picking up stray pet hair and dust bunnies with ease. Of course the hose is nice and long so the unit just trails behind you vs. hitting your feet. When you're done and ready to empty it, just pop the bin out, tap lightly on the ground to loosen any fine dust, and separate the two "halves". The dirt "pours" out; I like this setup much better as the possibility of a dust cloud is reduced.
It's been 9 months since I purchased my DC21, and it hasn't let me down yet. Still delivers the same performance as it did when I took it out of the box last March. It's a great machine that I do not regret paying $500 for at all. For the first Dyson I bought it has made a great impression to me about the brand's innovation, quality, and performance. As with any cleaner, it's not perfect (could have a much longer cord and better dusting brush & upholstery tool), but it's pretty darn close.

Pros:
Compact design; strong suction & airflow; long hose; Motorhead w/aggressive brushroll and pivot for easy steering; 2-piece bin; ability to pick up ultra-fine dust without clogging; excellent bare floor tool.
Cons:
Cord is short (only 18 ft.); long 1-piece wand arrangement somewhat bulky; dusting brush & upholstery tool so-so; no provision to store bare floor tool; heavy when stored in one piece |
