FYI.....

I'm told that the difference between a Mercury 50 hp 4-stroke Outboard and a Mercury 60hp 4-stroke Outboard is a carburator restricter plate (reducing the air/gas mixture and thus making a potential 60 hp motor into a 50 hp motor).  I personally haven't verified this.... but I know an authorized Mercury outboard mechanic who told me this in confidence.

Re: What do you recommend spraying the chute and auger with?

The properties of adhesion, solubility, abraidability and cost all come into play.  All the products previously mentioned address  those properties - and to varying degrees - and all probably work adequately.   I prefer silicone spray since I just happen to have it around, it's relatively inexpensive - and it both adhers well and residues remain, even in the very wet environment.  Waxes tend to scrap off more quickly and require repeated application - although some really good ski sprays reduce friction at subzero temperatures better than anything else.  So, as the expression goes...you choose your poison!!!

BBgarage....

You're right!!! Unless storage space is an issue - or physical condition of the operator or operator's alternate is a problem....go for the extra capacity unit.  I always believe there is a sense of false economy when it comes to buying some things.... if you buy in and find it's not going to do the job you hoped, you just end up buying something else to replace it... and, as you say, for the extra initial outlay, you have something that can be expected to handle almost all circumstances.  I know of someone three weeks ago who purchased a 10/30 2-stage unit - he started out looking at the smaller single stage machines ....and finally realized that, if his wife expected to handle things while he is on one of his many out-of-country business trips,  he'd better upgrade his acquisition to something she could more readily handle....she tried out both machines, and opted for the 10/30....so they are BOTH happy!!!   Now THAT's a lesson in decision making!!! <laugh>

To DNK1....

Careful...one man's meat is another man's poison!!!!  Some people wouldn't buy a Ford on a bet.... and others swear that Ford is the ONLY vehicle they would buy!!!  So to characterize another person's possible choice as JUNK suggests that unless your opinions are embraced as gospel, their decision would be s$%@ might be a little over the top!!!  A reasoned comparison would be more helpful in decision-making.

To...Ms SS....

1. Congrats to you for stimulating young minds to consider areas usually not associated with the minds of youths today.   We need more intellectual challenges for youth... these challenges flow contrary to the expected modes for youth today... and ANY direction which engages the imaginations of the younger people today is one which we should definitely pursue.

2. To some of you other guys, (unless this is some inside joke to which I am not privy) - GET A LIFE!!!  I spent 32 years working with young college minds -  and I commend any approach which tries to expand understandings in ANY area which has practical application to everyday life!!!  Nitpicking is not helpful - it's harmful.  Unfortunately, the perceived harm usually outweighs the perceived help.  I, for one, applaud what appears to be a stimulating exercise in understanding!!!
