Power Nozzles
01/29/07 at 6:23pm

I'm planning to upgrade my Tri-star PN with either a Hoover Quadraflex or a Wessel-Werk nozzle.  Which nozzle cleans deep pile carpet better b/c the Tri-star does fine but I bought a cheap brush roll (bristles only) & ever since it's been picking up less dirt than before I changed the roller (it had bristles/beater bar)  Is the upgrade REALLY nessecary? undecided

The only thing I knew was the Tri-Star (before I got a new brush roll) picked up years of dirt left behind by other vacs that I have but the BR bearings failed often (dont know why) & the bristles were very worn out, but its hard to beat a Tri-star vac with PN & beater bar; it even OUTCLEANS Tri-stars w/bristles only roller on the PN. Apparently the Quadraflex uses a flat stretch belt, while the WW's use cogged belts.

All the tristar parts site I could see on the internet offered brushes with dual brush rows.  None had beater bars.  Interesting that the bars are no longer used.

Hi,what model tri-star you have?. It would be a real hassle to adapt either of the powernozzles to your machine. The standard tri star/aerus powernozzle work just fine when everything is right on them. Where did you get the new brushrollor from?

You should be able to find a brushroll w/ beater bars on it.  I am curious as to which model you have.  Eureka built the power nozzles for the vacuum cleaner at one time and the beater bar agitators are still avail.  You may have a generic brushroll right now.

The HOOVER and Wessel-Werk power nozzles clean well.  The W-W is going to be alittle bit quieter and have the cogged belt.  This nozzle would be easy to fit, but very expensive.  I would say to stick w/ what you have.   After reading your posts, it looks like you are trying to find the "perfect" or "best" vacuum cleaner.  You are not going to find it.

"John Kaido, head of Tacony 's vacuum division, said he knew the company needed a better product. So his team tried to find a weakness in Miele. The complaint they heard most from dealers was that its power nozzle head was underpowered and a little hard to push across the floor. .......

Tacony invested $600,000 to develop a more powerful power nozzle, using Chicago industrial design firm Insight Product Development."

BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the top of the line RICCAR/SIMPLICITY canisters R1800/S38, the ones with the aluminum brush rolls, have beater bars.

They are faintly visible in the photos and are adjacent to the 3 rows of replaceable brush strips:

Interesting wrt John Kaido's Miele comments.

I've found the smaller of Miele's power nozzles (the 217) is indeed harder to push than their larger 236. But only if the Miele's motor speed is turned all the way up.  Apparently the small brush opening causes greater concentration of "suction" and creates drag.  Ironically, the smaller brush has much softer bristles, so it is not as thorough on rugs as its bigger brother.
Neither Miele power brush has beater bars, though.

Simplicity's site (found via Carmine's link leading to Simplicity's site)  offers the link to the business week article for those who wish to read it:

When I had my Rainbow's PN, which I believe is made by Eureka,  serviced.  The service man removed the old style brush roll that had plastic beater bars, and replaced it with an all brush roll simular to the one on the Oreck.  Though it does a good job of grooming the carpet, it doesn't seem to "beat" it too much anymore.

What I was wondering is:  Would it be possible to use or modifiy the Eureka Vibra-groomer for this PN?

I got a 2-speed red CXL Tristar w/Interstate built PN but it had a beater bar on the brush roll when I got the vac; the bristles were worn, so I got a cheap generic brush roll w/ball bearings.  But I should've bought a Eureka VibraGroomer roller since I know the Eureka roller can fit the Tristar PN & the Tri-Star is an UNBEATABLE vac when the PN has a beater bar, so sometimes I use my old Kenmore PN (got it from someone[geared belt]) thanx to its 2 rows of bristles + beater bar (but the height selector part broke) & has terific edge cleaning but no light.  Is that clip available @ any vac shop or do I have to go 2 Sears to get that clip its part of the selector that raises/lowers the front wheels.

Does anyone recommend "retro-fitting" beater bars on brush rolls?  I thought about that so the Tri-star can clean better b/c my shag (old) & hi pile (new) carpets need beating action of a beater bar + deep down grooming to remove old dirt the Electrolux left behind.  I'm not sure if the Tri-Star PN has "windtunnel" design like the Hoover WT & turbo brush, but its the BEST PN I own; however, I hate changing the "rubber band" belt every few months or when the brush stalls b/c it has no reset switch like the Lux & Sears PN.  What does the slide switch on top of the Tri-star PN have to do with carpet pile b/c the nozzle does NOT raise or lower when I slide the selector, or does it change airflow in the nozzle?

Although there's no "perfect vacuum" in the world, the Tri-Star is the closest to best but still not esp. when I got a generic brush roll b/c I couldn't afford a Vibra-Groomer type brush roll since thy're pricey but they last longer than the wood or plastic rollers.  Is there a new Vibra-Groomer 3 or 4 avail. for the old style Eureka PN b/c the brush for these PN's fit the Tri-Star PN (pre-EXL series)?  All I found is a VG1 & 2 roller for the early Eureka PN (but WILL fit the Tri-Star built PN).  The cheap bristles only BR barely seems to groom the carpeting, they're too soft for deep pile.

When I used the Tri-star (back when it had beater bars) to clean the carpets the bag filled with tons of sand & dirt that the other vacs can't get, it's STILL the "ultimate" vac when the PN has beater bars on the roller. Shocked

If anyone has a Tri-Star (before EXL mdl) it's a good idea to get a VG1 & 2 brush roll & you'll see the BIG difference in cleaning; it'll even pick up yrs of dirt that the PN missed when it had bristles only roll.  Even though it's expensive BR, it'll be cheaper to buy just the brush strips instead of replacing the ENTIRE BR.

Isn't it a shame that Hoover doesn't have beater bars anymore?  The delux Eureka PN has a STEEL agitator with steel beater bars NOT PLASTIC!  I think uprights & PN's should have metal brush rolls with metal beater bars & replaceable brush strips b/c plastic & wood get nicked over time & can ruin carpets.
