Title: Value of old Electroluxes
Post by Gael on 12/20/06 at 10:47pm

This may come as a surprise based on my old (circa 2004 or 5) opinions on my Electrolux Ultraluxe Classic canister, but I want to get rid of it and my mother's Electrolux that she purchased new around 1971 or '72.  Both probably need new hoses as they no longer pick up much dirt but the motors are still running.

Do these machines have any value?  Should I try to sell them, recycle them or just throw them out?

All opinions are welcome.

Hi Gael,

There really is not a lot of profit in old vacuums unless they are rare, complete and in extremely good condition.  If you are of a mind, I'd suggest posting on eBay and of course clearly stating the machines' flaws as well as their virtues.  You might make a little if you can ship at a low cost to yourself.  Your vacuums may be of value to some collectors or persons in need of parts.  Be mindful that that is always a crap shoot.  The last enthusiastic buy for the seemingly useless doesn't insure quick sale of a similar item the very next itme round.

You might possibly be given a receipt that you may use as a tax credit by donating them to organizations like the Salvation Army's thrift shops.

Nonetheless, don't expect to strike it rich.

Good luck,

Venson

You cannot expect big bucks for the sale of your vacuum cleaners.  Your mother's 1205 would probably sell at $75.00 at most and your machine might go for alittle over $100.00. You need to describe it completely and definately take as many different pictures as possible. The thing for you to do is search ebay before you sell.  Watch the vacuum cleaners, like yours, that are up for auction.  This way, you can get a feel of what they are selling for.

I really do not think that they should be thrown out, because there is someone out there that may be in need.  Think of someone who may be going out on their own.  It takes money to get a household started.

If all else fails, donate it to a good charity.

Thanks Mike and Venson,

I'm not really looking for big bucks on either machine.  It just seems like a shame to throw them out.  I was thinking of taking them to a recycling center to be stripped for their metal, but, perhaps, I will donate them to a charity instead.  Maybe someone handy will buy them and fix them up like new.

Thanks again.

Gael:

The Electrolux 1205 And Ultra Lux are a couple of the best built vacuums ever made.  Aerus, the new Electrolux company name, carries parts and repairs these vacuums. So do most of the independent vacuum cleaner stores in business today.

I suggest that you donate these vacuums to a local Animal Shelter and/or Animal Hospital.  These organizations are usually non-profits and operate on a very tight and thinly stretched budget.  The vacuums would be valued and welcomed gifts that are desperately needed.  And you can request a written receipt from the organizations for your annual income tax filings to support a charitable donation of the vacuums if you itemize deductions.  A win, win.

Hi Carmine,

Before I bought a new vac at Sears (their HEPA filtered one for about $300 on sale), I tried to get both Electroluxes fixed.  None of the Aerus stores in the North Suburbs of Chicago said they had or could get parts for my mother's cleaner.  They said it was too old and that they don't make the hose for it any more.  My Ultraluxe canister hose would have cost any where from $100 to $200 to replace and the hose I was shown that might work seemed awfully flimsy.

The problem with Aerus, as I see it, is that they are not truly interested in repairs - especially for the old Electrolux brand - they only want to sell new Aerus machines that are not worth the cost.

I'm not sure an Animal shelter would want to shoulder the cost of a repair, but you've given me the idea that I could try a local independent vac repair shop first.  Now all I have to do is find one.  ;D  They're not too common around here; everyone is affiliated with one brand or another.

Thanks, Carmine.

A new electric hose[genuine], pt# 45790 is 92.99 list.

to overhaul your machine and powernozzle is$75 to 100.00 plus parts, it comes with a 2 year warranty on all parts and labor.

You just have been going to the wrong places...........

Hello Jimmy the Old-Time Pro:

You are right on the money with the Lux repair and parts prices.  $150-$200 "investment" on an Ultra Lux with a 2 year warranty beats most if not all the new $300 vacuums today on the market which usually come with a one year warranty (IMHO).

I'd probably recommend spending even more than $200 if need be to keep the old luxes going strong.  They just don't make new vacuums today as good as those vacuums were made.  As the commercial goes:  "Priceless."

Gael;

I am sorry that you were misinformed.  Parts are still available for the Electrolux machines.  Whoever gets them next, will be able to find parts for them and have a good vacuum cleaner.

Gael,
I am an Aerus sales consultant. I am referred to as an independent contractor for them. I am sorry you are misimformed about avaiability of parts.
Not all of us want to push the customer but keep them. I had a 1205 circa 1969 had a new motor put in it the other day. Customer satisfied. If I can help in any way PM me and I will see what I can do.

Thanks everyone.  Tiger, is the Ultralux Classic canister as powerful as the top of the line Sears HEPA filtered canister?  You're probably laughing at my question but I really don't know any of the stats on the Electrolux.

I had a Lux 1205 w/ PN1 & "Turbo Tool" rug washer (it was my mom's vac) for many yrs but when I moved I threw the vac b/c it was too beat up (but kept the tools & hose)  Later I got another 1205 from E-bay (w/ chrome PN2) & it seemed to have barely used but STILL in better shape than her original 1205. :)

If CU were to do something innovative, they could do a test on the old rebuilt Electrolux to see how well it does stand up to the modern day units in the same price range.

The LUX may take a beating in the area of "emissions", but, if this is a real problem or not, I do not know..

I take it, that this Electrolux 1205 is American built...

And when a good dealer is found , cherish this knowledge, they may be a dissappearing breed...

My "shop vac" is an old  Electrolux, this makes the others in the $50 to $100 range seem like so much junk - even as brand new...

Hi, I can only tell you what i use in my own home.  We use an electrolux silverardo with a p/n 7.
The machine itself is 25 years old,i have serviced the machine, cordwinder, and automatic twice since new. the power nozzle, attachments and sidekick are off the shelf Aerus/electrolux parts. The standard home solutions aerus bags filter to 94% down to 0.3 microns. all in all the machine cleans to our satisfaction, the canister is bullit proof when used as specified and serviced every 8 to 10 years. the only draw back is the weight , but when the day comes that i have to take a nap after cleaning. I'll just hire a cleaning lady ;D.

B.T.W. after being in the vacuum business for 35 years .When i get home the last thing on my mind is vacuums.........

Hope this helps you
