Silly question . . . but if you don't ask . . .

HI gang.

Does a long wind-down -- meaning the time it takes the armature to come to a complete stop after shutting off your vacuum -- indicate excellent bearing condition?

Thanks,

Venson

Hi O.T.,

The vacuum runs perfectly when switched on, suction is wonderfully high and there are no sounds or odors indicating anything untowards while in use.  However, when I switch the cleaner off it takes just a little longer than I am accustomed to to stop.  Yes, there is a high pitched sound as the armature rotation ends but it is not loud.  The machine in question is a Miracle Mate.

Thanks,

Venson

Hello Venson, OT:

How old is the Miracle Mate and how often do you use it?

Hi Carmine,

I just bought it recently and much more for expanding my first-hand knowledge than for long-term or primary use -- still putting miles on the Iridium.

You know me -- I wasn't about to buy one brand new.  However, it is the Platinum version and new enough to employ polarized eletrical outlet as the power connection for the hose. (The plug on the hose pigtail and the electrical port on the cleaner are now designed to fit only one way.)  How far does that go back? I did shave out the plastic on the outlet on the working end of the hose and I can now attach either style plug.

The vacuum's history is unknown but it was clean as a whislte when I got it and, as I said, has power aplenty.  I was about to switch the Lindhaus power nozzle I have at work with another Eureka piece but the button lock on the wand I have won't insert far enough to lock.  No big deal.  It it did perfectly well with a corded Kenmore nozzle I had around.  The hose end hooks up perfectly with Tri-Star wands which are a smidgin smaller in diameter than most.

Hello Venson:

Dirt build up on the motor fans will cause the longer shut down time.  The added weight of the dirt on the fan blades increases the motor's centrifugal force and the time to come to rest (stop).  Oftentimes the dirt is evenly distributed on the fan blade openings so the armature and motor bearings will revolve in balance without making unusual noises and causing loss of suction.  The tell tale sign of the dirt build up on the fans is the longer motor shut down time.

Miracle Mate promoted lifetime warranties on motors to dealers but now show 3 year warranties. Do you think they got stung?

Hi tiger21,

That's the exact reason why no one should ever bother buying one at the usual price.  The machine is reasonably but not remarkably quiet and has very strong suction.  Besides the suction the main reason to purchase this brand is because of its cast metal construction.  The bags are very expensive and it should also be known that the Miracle Mate Platinum cannot be used with only its cloth bag.  You do not get full suction unless the heavy-collared disposable bag is in place with the cloth bag.

Anyway, it's an interesting machine that performs well and that is durable.

Hi Venson , do you have any idea how many hours are on the machine. Is it the modular motor with the top carbon bracket made of the plastic composite.

As the carbons start to wear the springs loose their tensile strength. And less friction on the rotating assembly will cause the motor,to spin freely.

Its more than likely beyond the break in period.

This vacuum cleaner is actually better for those who have some allergies, since it uses the closed top bag.  Less dust will escape compared to the "Compact-style" vacuum cleaners w/ their "open" bag.
