Best vacuum for families with allergies
01/17/07 at 8:06pm

Hi,

I stumbled upon your site and am hoping you can help me sort out all the information I'm finding on the internet.

My youngest has horrible allergies and I really want to invest in a vacuum that's considered the best in dealing with dust particles, etc. Obviously, price will be a consideration in my final decision, but I'd love to know what really is the best of the best out there -- regardless of price.

Thanks!

If you are a COSTCO member, the HOOVER WT SP bagged will be on sale from Feb 12-Feb 18, 2007 for $177.  This model includes 6 HEPA bags and the 20 foot super stretch hose.  The regular COSTCO price is $217.  Prices of the WT have come down since the the WT2 was intro'ed mid 2006.

Aerus ( formerly Electrolux US) has the Guardian that is a true sealed system HEPA cleaner. The other cleaners from Aerus will filter to 1 micron. The bags on all machines will filter 94% down to .3 micron or HEPA.
More information can be found at Aerusonline.com. Word is a new sealed system HEPA upright is coming soon. At least check it out. The allergy sufferers I have sold love them.

I vaguely remember reading recently that when Hoover went from paper bags and a HEPA filter to the HEPA filter bags, that in CR's testing emissions went way up due to leakage around the bag collar.  Thus, I don't know that the WT can be recommended for a family with allergies.

Hello RAT:

You are correct.  I researched the October 2006 CR ratings and the HOOVER WT SP gets a rating of "fair" for emissions.  In the same pub, the HOOVER Tempo (rated 8 and one of my favorite vacuums with an MSRP $60) and the HOOVER WT Supreme (rated 20 with an MSRP of $120 and the vacuum I currently use daily) are rated "Excellent" for emissions.  I use 3M Fitrette paper/cloth bags Style Y in my WT Supreme which also fit the Tempo.  My dear Wife has allergies and sinus issues and the extra cost for the filtrette bags is well worth it.

I would recommend a cnetral vac for the best in dealing with  dust, as no air is beeing recirculated back into the room, it is all vented outside.

The next best thing would be a vacuum that uses a true sealed HEPA system.  One thing to remember, most big box vacuums that advertise HEPA filtration do not really filter to correct HEPA specifications.  For example, the latest Hoover Windtunnel HEPA filters have no seal and let dirty air pass freely around the filter, and teh Eureka Mighty Mite has vent holes behind the wheels that let dirty air out before it ever touches the HEPA filter.  You should look at something like a Riccar, Simplicity, Sebo, Lindhaus or Miele.  These brands all offer vacuums that will capture dirt and dust as well as you need.

Here is a site that will give you good information on central vacuums, I also highly recommend the brand:
