Electrolux and Kenmore are the big winners in the latest ratings. The Electrolux Oxygen EL5035A is the big winner in terms of publicity - being both on the front cover and featured in a major way on the "features that count" page.

CR has decided to make vacuum weight count more in the "ease of use" scores.

CR is working on developing new tests related to pet hair on carpeting. In the future CR will rate vacuums based on how well they pick up pet hair. CR will be looking at how much hair makes it into the bag or dirt canister. Some $400+ vacuums have lousy preliminary scores for handling pet hair.

CR still doesn't have adequate reliability data for Dyson.

Kirby changed models and was not tested.

The Hoover Fusion and Eureka Optima were not recommended due to dirt emissions.

The Miele cannister they tested was the Plus; rated midpack. Sears kenmore did very well...top 3 places below Oxygen 3 (oxygen was only can to get excellent on rugs).

They tested the Sebo 3.1 with the older powerbrush (C series) again, and the Bosch Premium with the small power head.

Wrt uprights, the Hoover Tempo upright outdid the Dyson DC15 on rugs (excellent .vs. good), but remains noisy.
The cheapest Bissell Powerforce ($40) proved the best Bissell at cleaning rugs (VG).

The Hoover Fusion seemed lower midpack in performance save for emissions, where it was only fair.

The Z was midpack; excellent cleaning except only fair with tools (low dirt capacity) and ease of use.

The Airider (floating vac) was poor on rugs and dirt capacity but very good on emissions. Bottom ranked.

Why does it surprise you that as vacuum cleaners evolve, so do the tests? I applaud CR for adding a score related to a vacuums ability to remove pet hair from the rug and deposit it into either the bag or dust container. CR does listen to reader requests and adapts when it seems reasonable.

an interesting note;
The Sebo X4 only did fair for vacuuming with tools, while the C3.1 did good.
Both of these vacs use exactly the same bags.
In this case it suggests the C's more powerful motor/fan setup made a difference.
By comparison, the Bosch Premium did VG on this test. Main difference? Filtrette bags.

And also noted, the toprated vac was a bagged model, but its picture is of the slightly lower rated bagless version.
