There are going to be floor tools out there that will be 3" or slightly below. There are some generic floor tools that will register under 3".

The Riccar 1500M(or 1500S)/Simplicity S20(or S18) are very good cleaners that are relatively quiet, have power and can use a natural-hair floor brush. Bags will not be expensive.

Are you sure you checked out all of the floor tools for the Miele. They do have a newer one-

How do I look for generic floor tools that will fit a specific brand/model?

What is the difference between Riccar and Simplicity?  It seems those 2 names always go together.

I went to Riccar's web site and the only dealer they listed to be near my zip code is about 1 hour away.  Do you know which national retailers carry these?

On something like these, I avoid the online companies -- because if I have to return it, I have to pay shipping both ways.

Re Miele.  I went to their showroom; and that is the tool that the salesman measured -- the stiff "knob" which connects to the wand is over 3" high.

TIA

If you are so inclined, you might want to check out the GE canister (made by Eureka) at Wal*Mart for $160. It appears to meet your requirements.

I'd probably opt for one of the Aerus tanks/Riccar mid-size canns and/or the bosch canister. Why? I have 1500 sq feet including wall-to-wall wool medium pile carpets in the bedrooms. And furniture clearance is a consideration for me too. And the 3 models I mentioned are on the short list of buys.

If you go look at these vacuums, I would appreciate if you would measure the floor tools and post them here.  I don't have Wal-Mart or Costcos in my area.  I have Home Depot, PC Richards and Bed Bath & Beyond.  And they don't have those brands.  I see Miele, Dyson, Hoover, Eureka.  May be Macy's & Bloomingdales would have them?

I bought the Eureka Boss because of the low-profile floor tool; and ended up returning it -- because the wand keep coming off while vacuuming and the cord have to manually rewound.

By the way, does anyone know whether one can search (on the internet) for these vacuums and restrict the search to a geographical area or, even better, by zip code?

TIA

When you know the vacuum cleaner you are using, then you can look for a floor attachment that wil fit.

You should have a vac shop near you.  You need to pay them a visit.

When I write "Riccar/Simplicity", it is because Tacony Corp. owns both brands and markets them to vac shops.  If you can find it under the Riccar name, you will definately find it under the Simplicity name.  Most of the time, there are only cosmetic differences like different color, hood, light arrangement, handle grip, etc.  So look for a Simplicity dealer near you.  If you cannot find a dealer near you, you might have to do a little driving.

If you want to limit your search to a specific geographic area, you will need to add your state in the search field besides the vacuum cleaner brand/model.  Then only results that have your state will appear in the results first.

If you have a Sears, you might also check there. Most big box stores don't carry any, or many, canisters, but Sears usually has a few you can look at. You could also check with local vacuum specialty shops. Some vac shop canisters will have prices in the $700-1200 range, so decide how much you are willing to spend at a maximum before you shop.
