Royal Tank Problem

Greetings to All,

I have a five year old Royal metal tank vacuum. While my spouse was using the canister vaccum, a strong electrical odor was emitted. My daughter said electrical sparks were emitted from the back of the tank. Upon investigation, the bag was full and the spouse sucked up an object clogging the hose.

I suspect the motor overheated and burned out. How much would it cost to replace the motor? If I need to replace the canister vacuum, what do you recommend within a cost of $250 and either new, used or refurbished? I need the canister vacuum to clean hardwood floors and cars (suction only with long flexible hose). I have a Royal metal upright vacuum to do the carpet. Thank you in advance for your advice.

The motor, for your Royal tank cleaner, will be expensive. It will be around $150.00. You will have to decide if the machine is worth it to you. They are very durable vacuum cleaners. The vacuum is liteweight for a canister and the attachements are much better quality than what is out there today. If you really like the vacuum cleaner, it might be a good idea to fix it. If you are on the line w/repair or replace, then replace the vacuum cleaner. There are decent canisters that will clean other than carpeting, since you have a Royal upright.

The problem w/this series is that they are no longer made. Some parts are already in short supply.

Thank you for your replies. The Royal model number is 4350. I called Hesco and was told the motor number part was changed and the cost was around $180 if I remember correctly. I do like the Royal tank. I made a very flexible ten foot hose for use to clean the car inteior and high areas such as ceiling fans and webs at ceilings. The suction is very good and the parts are high quality.

I looked at canisters in the local market. Straight suction canisters include Miele $400, Sanitaire $300, Royal $350, Kenmore $180 and all are made of plastic with small bags and cheap atatchments. I estaimate the suction from the Royal tank was highest. I will take the Royal tank for a repair estimate to the local authorized dealer. This dealer is known to charge top dollar for all most everything in store.

If the dealer charges too much for the repair, what brands do you recommend for a well built straight suction vacuum?

Hi that motor can be repaired if the service guy's sharp enough and knows were to get the parts.I would be more than happy to give it a shot for you.Reparing motors is a lost art these days,everything is just R/R. No challenge anymore. The royal pony tank vacuum is a ICON,almost as much our beloved electrolux's,.

An ol trick is to take the bullit proff royal tank and adapt a electrolux p/n 5,6,or 7 power nozzle and you would have a vacuum that would put to shame any vacuum out there at any price.I know because i've done it..........

Over the last few years, I have read and enjoyed your responses to others. Your ability to stick to the facts and to add a little humor to the mix is appreciated.

I am unable to send you a private message. I would like to enquire about your offer to repair the motor instead of replacing it. The local Royal authorized dealer has not provided a cost estimate to date. If you are interested, send me a private message and I will ask for a worst case estimate to repair the motor. The Royal tank is engineered simplicity at its best and I should be able to remove it and ship just the motor.

This is not exactly true, because Royal used two designs of power nozzles in the last years of the Power Tank. While I can say that their Douglas-built power nozzles were weak on thick carpeting and needed something better, their last power nozzle was very effective at cleaning carpeting and used a cogged belt. It also had a manual height adjustment.

I improved the performance of my FQ by using a Whirlpool-designed power nozzle on it instead of the Douglas-made power nozzle.

Hi Mike,i would agree to a certain point,yes the newer cen-tec made power heads are a vast inprovement over the f.q g48 powerhead which royal and f.q. shared.
The centec powerhead thats used by many different mfgs, have big wand and elbow problems,also some cord management issues.

If you would like to know how i set up the power tank with the lux power head,pm me and ill give you a few secrets how it was done. The machine is still being used today in a commercial setting, this was my own backyard r@d program.
