The three position handle is a boon. It will lock in any one of thre positions-full upright, almost full upright, and flat. The flat position os great for cleaning mattresses and stairs, and the full up right position is great for whisking off the couch cushions without the need to mess with a hose. I have actually used the machine in the partial upright position to whisk the pleats of the draperies, a bit heavy for most users, but fast!
