The US Hoover branded vacuum you buy today is also sold as an Oreck, Royal or Dirt Devil. All they do is change the color and the name on the machine. Most of these are made in China and are achingly cheap. At least one Hoover commercial upright model comes out of the old Oreck plant alongside and identical Oreck branded machine. The original Hoover factories are all long ago closed. It is not the same Hoover from the days when it was family owned and headquartered in Ohio. When old man Hoover died the heirs didn't want to keep the business in the family and sold it. Maytag bought the US arm and Candy Group of Italy bought their European operations. When Whirlpool bought out Maytag they immediately sold Hoover to Hong Kong based TTI, apparently not wanting to get back into the business of making vacuums after having sold their former vacuum making business to Panasonic in 1995. Candy Group still makes Hoover branded products sold in the EU.
