WHICH Survey 2011
Original Message   Feb 23, 2011 9:35 am
WHICH UK consumer has found the following information;

Upright vacuum cleaners - best brand overall is SEBO.

"..Sebo comes top in the upright vacuum category, with the highest reliability (93%) and customer scores (83%) plus one Best Buy model. (SEBO FELIX, to which this company says "... SEBO FELIX excels at vacuuming hard floors thanks to its hard floor nozzle and deals brilliantly with pet hair. It's easy to manoeuvre and is very good at getting into nooks and crannies - unusually for an upright vacuum cleaner). Dyson matches SEBO for average test score but is some way off matching SEBO for reliability and customer scores. Hoover only manages one star for reliability - and gets a low customer score of 42%..."

Score table:

SEBO 93% reliability score (out of 298)
ORECK 86% reliability score (out of 53)
PANASONIC 82% reliability score (out of 165)
AEG (includes Electrolux) 80% reliability score (out of 68)
DYSON 80% reliability score (out of 1780!)
VAX 54% reliability score (out of 189)
HOOVER 57% reliability score (out of 156)

Cylinder vacuum cleaners - best brand overall is MIELE.

"...Miele's impressive reliability score of 97% is matched by Numatic (which makes Henry and James vacuums amongst others). All 12 of the Miele machines we've tested are Best Buys, whereas none of the Numatic vacuums we've tested have earned a Best Buy award (and one model is a don't buy).

NUMATIC 97% reliability score (out of 208)
MIELE 97% reliability score (out of 1576!)
VAX 92% reliability score (out of 68)
BOSCH  91% reliability score (out of 212)
DYSON 88% reliability score (out of 308)
AEG/ 88% reliability score (out of 91)
HOOVER 86% reliability score (out of 58)

Hi vacmanuk:

Thank you for the details.  Consumer Reports should follow in the same approach as Which? and publish the reliability data by brands in the same kind of details.  It would be far more useful to American vacuum consumers and industry professionals.

No. Those are the number of models that Which have collected info from - which goes to prove that in most cases, even the highest number of models sold aren't the best.

The number of models doesn't really factor or per person though - some households in the UK have two vacuums - so it would be impossible to factor all that data in and make a summary of it. Which sent me a letter at the start of the year when I joined up asking me what brands I have at home and if any have needed serviced, as well as brands that have surpassed expectations. Whether or not they use that information is beyond me - they just gather info from their members as well as test their own models and make up the data judged by both.
