I tried the Dyson DC17 several years ago...I was quite impressed with it too!
FWIW, dyson's DC17 made the best ratings by Consumer Reports at the 10 spot on several occasions. As pointed out here, it's aggressive brush roll caused damage to rugs and one maker [Unique Carpeting from California] voided its rug warranty with any dyson, due to this model in particular. Dyson regurgitated the DC17 model October 2008 with a SAM's Club exclusive DC27 for $479. Didn't sell very well. Dyson bundled with a free DC16 for Sam's before the 2009 Christmas sales and that didn't spark sells. Dyson's DC17 is available for $450 at most retailers before additional in store discounts. So 2 similar dyson upright models compete for sales against each other with price. I suspect both will be discontinued in time if dyson is true to its form.
