 The DUSTBUSTER was unveiled at the August 1978 Hardware Show in Chicago. It was an enormous hit and was chosen as the “Best New Product in Show.”
The DUSTBUSTER went to market in 1979.

I opined that Black & Decker's Dustbuster sold more units than Royal's Dirt Devil but was amazed by the number.  Here's the excerpt:
