156,000 vacs is a drop in the bucket compared to what was actually sold. Some interesting questions could be raised (and some premature conclusions jumped to) if we knew the breakdown (no pun intended) of the numbers sold per brand per year. That would yield the following data: 1) percentage of total vacs surveyed vs # of vacs actually sold, total, and by brand and by year 2) percentage of recommended models sold vs vacs sold, total, and by brand and by year, (this would track whether C/R's influence in the market is increasing, decreasing, or staying level 3) percentage of vacs surveyed vs vacs sold, total, and by brand, and by year 4) percentage of CR recommended vacs surveyed vs CR recommended vacs sold total, and by brand and by year If anyone is sufficiently mathematically gifted, (and search engine literate) to pinpoint the above mentioned data and plot it on a graph, it may provide for a lively discussion. I have just one question. Does one serve red, or white wine with a big fat can of worms? Trebor

Since 20 MILLION new full size vacuums are sold each year, and have been for this 2000 decade, a sample size based on a suvey of 156,000 has limited reliability [no pun intended]. Tho, not to take any credit away from the vacuums that have scored well in reliability over the years. Certainly KIRBY, dyson, and RAINBOW are commendable for their CR reliability results to date. I prefer to see a statistical validity percentage [as Trebor mentions] based on each of the brand name/models tested. This would provide a degree of certainty upon which the results associated with the survey findings can be relied upon by readers/consumers. This is done for all the research surveys and can be done by Consumer Reports too for more accurate and meaningful reporting of survey data. Carmine D.
