1959 Hamilton Beach Hat Box Vacuum on Ebay
Original Message   Aug 11, 2008 8:35 pm
I was seaching on Ebay and found this vacuum. I thought I would bring it to some collectors attention on this forum.  It is not my auction, but enjoy going to Ebay to look at the older vacuums. I never saw this kind of cleaner before, I know Sunbeam had similar shape but never knew Hamilton Beach also made vacuums.

George... I also check in at the other forums (none of them are active enough for me to just use one)...  this forum seems to be geared more toward big box brands and Dyson (hating or loving).... not so much collecing/collectors.  At least that's what I can gather for the conversations I've seen.

Hi VF,

Though this forum is mainly focused on information, news, and advice regarding vacuums currently in manufacture, I don't think we can be of half as much use or help unless we can also convey what we collectively know of the past.  There is less to wonder at when contemplating what could be when we know of that which has already been.

Best,

Venson

This forum is mainly about vacuum cleaners, and the like, of the present.  Occasionally, there will be discussion of past.   What this forum is not about is just vacuum cleaners of the past.  There are other forums for that.  I recall a Yahoo group about classic vacuum cleaners.  They even had a remark, on their front page,  that said something to the fact that "if you want to talk about new vacuums, visit Whats the Best-Vacuum.com."

I recall a former member of the forum who wanted to talk about old vacuum cleaners.  He could not talk about a new vacuum cleaner w/ knowledge.  I told him, as I will say again, it is important to know where vacuums have come from.  It helps us find out how we can improve the vacuum cleaners of the present and future.  We do not need to stay in the past.  We do not need to dwell on the vacuum cleaners of the past.  That is the hobby of the vacuum enthusiasts.  Longtime members know that I use alot of info, from the past, when discussing a present vacuum cleaner.  That is one part of being a good salesman.  Bring knowledge.   I must know what I am talking about.

My comment to "George" has to do w/the comments he made.  From what I gathered, he is selling the HB "hatbox" cleaner.

George, I looked at the screenname you gave us and it looks like you are more into beauty products than vacuum collecting.  Vacuum enthusiasts like Venson and Vacuumfreak already view/use ebay, as Venson already stated in his above post.

George says it's not his auction.  Mike says it is!  Is this an impasse and/or issue here?  Or just mentioned for talking purposes?

Carmine;

Just leave it alone.  It is just an observation.

Too late to leave it alone, Mike.  You shed some light here and revealed an observation that I didn't realize/know.  Now, I want to look at it and talk about it.

Specifically, please answer this question: Is it against the rules of protocol of this site to post about ebay listings here?  If the poster owns the auction?  If the poster does not?

It is not against the rules to post ebay listings here.  That is why this thread was not deleted.  Posting links or referring others to your site is against the rules.  You can pay to have links posted.  Notice those ads on the side?  This site gets money for those ads being there.  So why should someone come on here and post a link to their website, phone number, or address of their business for free, when others pay for it?

In the past, I have deleted posts where someone has come on here and posted links to their website.  They come on with "have you tried this product yet, WOW! It is great!"  Or, "tell me what you think."  It can be anything, including porno.

Posting your own ebay auction should be considered the same thing, but there are no specific rules, yet.  There will be soon, because we do know what will happen.  So when red flags come up, all one can do is point out something that looks suspicious.  Now, don't anyone get on their "high horse" and say "Well, I never".  Oh, yes, you have.  Think through the years, on all the different sites.  Remember someone coming on and "selling" a Kirby.  Then someone comes on and points out that it is a Kirby salesman.  How about this site?  I think I have read where someone has made mention of dyson salesmen.  So all one can do is point out suspicious points made.

I hope that answered your question(s), Carmine.  BTW, if anyone has any comments, just email me.

Mike:

Thanks for responding.  Bear with me further and read on.

I excerpted the relevant parts of your post above.  I am still a bit confused by these 3 statements.  Why?  Your second statement contradicts your first and third statements.

Based on your first statement, George's post is fine.  Based on your third statement, George's post is fine.  BUT  [here's the clinker] based on your second statement, George's post may and/or may not be fine.  Why?  Please, read on.

George did not post the link to the ebay auction but he referred to the auction in a post.   Based on your statements 1 and 3 above, George is fine.  But, based on your second statement George's post is inappropriate.  Why?  You allege twice that George referred to his own ebay auction.  According to your second statement that is against the rules.

Here's my next question for you if you would please answer:  Suppose a poster says here that there is an ebay auction for vacuum XYZ but the poster does not give the site address and/or link [George's case].   Is posting ABOUT THE EBAY LISTING a problem/issue here?  Whether it is the poster's auction or not.

This must be HB's coming out time!

This is not my auction.  I don't know the owner directly or indirectly.  Have no idea.  This was sent to me by private email and is just too good a vacuum interest item not to post here.  It's a very rare model indeed.  Of note is the permanent cloth bag with paper insert.  Typical of the 50's which I suspect is this HB model's vintage.  Square design which is a different shape than the norm for this era of vacuum canister.  The attachment and hose fit mirror the GE Swivel top canns of this era.  As do some of the attachments like the hose fittings, wands, crevice, and upholstery.  Enjoy vintage vacuum and nostalgia lovers.

BTW, I have no plans to bid and I don't make any explicit/implied claims for others to.
