ariensst824 snowblower carb. problem

I have a an older Ariens snowblower that I am having a problem with. I can get it started, but it will only continue to run with the choke half way closed. also it will not get up enough speed to blow the snow properly. Is there any one that has a suggestion of a fix? i think it is carb. related. any help would be apreciated. peter
