Purchased this unit recently, as I like the MTD 31 cc engine. This is a proven reed valve 2 stroke design in use since the late 70's. The fan is arranged vertically at the front of the unit, very unusual design, I like that. The vacuum tube mounts just above the blower tube at the front. Plastic and fit/finish is excellent, feels robust. The 31cc engine is the quad port transfers with chrome cylinder and 2 ring piston. The casting quality is very fine, much better than some more expensive brands. Comes with Walbro carb, adjustable low speed, fixed high speed jet. Muffler has a cat converter and spark arrestor screen. Air Filter is oiled foam. Throttle is a cruise control type, with 5 speed settings.
Unit starts easily, I used the TruFuel 40:1 canned fuel from my local hardware store. The noise level is a bit more than some other brands but not obnoxious. Power is excellent really hauls the mail. The manual stats velocity as 205, I believe it.
Owners manual is really awful, printed on newpaper and does not give directions on changing the fuel filter, MTD need to improve their manuals. No pictures of unit detailing maintenance etc...
Overall, this is a tough, well made machine with plenty of power, and for the money is a great choice. I paid $130.00 for mine at a chain hardware store (not Big Box).
