My ariens had the same issue. Your starter is probably ok and as KDEZ mentioned it is probably the gear. Mine was cast and quite "chewed up". the gear was cheap and easy to replace. it aint rocket science. easy DYI project. get your hands dirty

I use marine grease. Easy to find in any auto parts shop and probably cheaper than anything that says snowmobile!

Wow, You blow the driveway, yet shovel the plow crap due to a few scratches? Couple cans of rustoleum in the spring would save a lot of backaches I would think

I did remove the bearings but not the roll pins. Got the washers back in and reassembled. How does removing the roll pins help? Thanks

I cant seem to get the washers back in place on the shift carrier/speed fork. There has got to be a trick to this but I haven't figured it out yet. very frustrated. Thanks Pete
