No fuel due to fuel cap? Ariens Tecumsen 11.5 hp

Hi, My Ariens kept stalling after short runs today. Determined that no fuel was getting to the carb and was prepared to open up the carb to inspect the float. After disconnecting the fuel tank line and opening the shut off, no fuel flowed out of the tank. I loostened the cap and it gushed out. So I reassembled and left the cap loose and it ran just fine. Any idea what the problem is or what I need to do about it?
