Arien 6hp snowblower/lawnmower
#1   Jan 16, 2008 9:48 pm
I opted to buy my  Ariens snowblower used off of craigslist because it came with a 24" mower deck for summer use.  Theres also a brushhog and a few other options that were available back in the 70s.  Anyone else have these options to play with?  I'm working on a small generator idea, my dad has the generator made for a 5 hp motor, I just need to find a dead snowblower to part out for the bolt on coupling and drive shaft.

My ID number was on the pullstart  cover up on top by the spark plug.  I had to use some sandpaper to find it.  Your looking for a number like H60 75354M Ser 5190D.
The H60 tells you the HP, this one is 6 hp.
electric ignition

I see aftermarket kits for tecumsehs to convert to electronic ignition, get rid of the points.  Has anyone tried this, does it improve reliability.  I know the even the cheapest Walmart lawnmower has elec ignition and starts on the second pull no matter how much you neglect it.
I guess the real question is what is the aftermarket kit going to do?  if its just replacing the points and you still have the condensor with an ok spark, its not that great.

I have an H60 Tecumseh on an Ariens snowblower/lawnmower
Re: leaky carb

Just a quick note for the future.  So others might not make my mistake.  This seems like a good posting to put this in.
I decided to do a carb rebuild the night before the big storm. Soaked all the parts in cleaner for a period then attacked every orffice on the carb body with my air compressor.  After reassembly it leaked gas out the little vent tube behind the choke plate.
I disassembled again and found I had blown the seat (needle and seat) out of the carb and didn't notice.  The seat is a little white donut impossible to find on a garage floor.  A night of shoveling and a trip two towns over to the power equip store and I was back in business.

Another note,  it's worth buying the carb rebuild kit if your going to open up the carb.
