I had a problem similar to yours on my vintage Ariens. it was caused by the drive plate unscrewing itself outwards, hence it was always in contact with the friction disc. I simply added some loctite and screwed it back in. Note it is a left-handed thread.

You need HP to keep those rpm's up when encountering heavier snow and/or using a higher drive gear. Also the diameter of the impeller is important the larger it is the higher the snow velocity will be leaving the impeller surface, but there are other factors including impeller and chute design. I was never able to get a actual number for speed of the Honda impellers, but their snowblower engines run between 3850-4000rpm where most others run at 3600rpm.

Its not a normal discharge chute its a new "venturi" discharge chute. The constriction causes an increase in the speed of the air snow "fluid" as it moves through the tube. Basic fluid dynamics .
LOL, nibbler I like your thinking.
To me it looks like the cage, that stops people from putting their hand down the chute, got riped off.

I would say no, b/c it looks like Ariens already bumped up the impeller speed by 10% for your model. For example my 1971 Ariens has a 2.5in/9in pulley setup =1000rpm impeller speed, yours has a 2.75in/9in setup=1100rpm i.e. a 10% increase. If you go with the 8in pulley then 2.75in/8in will equal an impeller speed of 1237.5rpm ~24% increase from Ariens original design spec. FYI impeller speed = (engine pulley dia./impeller pulley dia.)*(max. engine rpm). BTW. There is usually a 10:1 ratio between impeller speed and auger speed i.e. 1000rpm(impeller) to 100rpm(auger).
