Last week I started it with the choke closed (up) and started clearing snow. Within a minute it sputtered and died. I have not been able to start it since then. Even during winter I add stabil to gas. The gas in the tank is full, but it might be a few months old. I will get a new spark plug and see if it helps. What do you think is going on with it? Any suggestions?
I had some starting difficulties with my Toro 421QE earlier this winter too. I had to use my electric starter for about 30 seconds to get it going. First time actually needing to use it, but my arms were getting sore from repeated pulls. I was using some old gas that was treated with Stabil as well. After burning though that old gas and putting in fresh gas, it had no more starting problems.
You can try to drain all the gas through by loosening the thumb knob under the carburetor bowl to flush out any sediments or water. After that, tighten the thumb knob and add fresh gas. Hopefully, it will start without replacing parts or touching the carb. Good luck.
I pulled the spark plug, the tip was black, wet/oily etc. Dipped it in seafoam. Tried to install the new plug I got without success. It is NGK BPR5ES. It would not screw in. I might have stripped the threads. Somehow I was able to put the old cleaned up 'torch' brand plug back in. Maybe the new plug was not the right one?.. I drained the bowl as you suggested. It started. Without draining the gas entirely. Still disappointed in not being able to replace the plug and possibly having stripped the thread ưn the engine.

My hands are not large but I can't possibly reach into there holding the spark plug, I used Honda's spark plug socket without the wrench/metal piece first.
if old one went in, then the new plug could be off. return it and buy another one or another brand. doubt u stripped it if the old one could go back in. good luck
u need to drain all ur fuel out.. and get fresh fuel.. do NOT use old... if fuel sits for more than month it can go stale... if old plug was wet/oily when u pulled it out u need to replace it.. it will not start with that fouled off plug.. Honda I find are more prone to not starting with older fuel, I think its because they use a little less compression on start up then other brands hence there easy to pull over..
