Old tire leaking at rim
Original Message   May 17, 2014 3:21 pm
Got an old SB tire that leaks slowly at the rim.    I really don't want to go through the work of replacing the tire and have no assurance a new one will bond any better to the old rim.

Is there a good goop to help seal it?

try fix a flat!. deflate the tire and then add the fix a flat right out of the can. if it doesn't inflate it to the correct pressure than finish by adding air. once it's inflated simply drive or rotate the tire by hand to distribute the sealant. if it doesn't work the rim might be too rusty and you may have to demount the tire and clean it up some.

I agree. Get a tube. They can be had for around $5 a piece if you shop around online and with 2 tubes in there those tires will never leak again You should be able to squeeze it in without removing the tire as well. Just go slow and take your time and make sure you don't pinch it in there. A little soap might help too. If you do have the time to dismount the tires it might help to clean out any dirt and rust you have in there and maybe paint the inside of the rims first.

i agree with the others, tubes are probably the most reliable way to go... I tube all flats or slow leaks unless customer does not want a tube!!!

Just add a tube. I had a leaker that looked good from the outside, as soon I broke the bead, I saw crusty rust in the sealing area. The tube is the best option. My tube was less expensive than a can fix your flat. I have a small set of smooth tire spoons for mounting and demounting lawn and garden tires, so I don't poke a hole in the tube. Mark

Challenge not to damage the tube assembling it, but it works!

What should the pressure be with a tube, same as without?

Thx.

Yes, pressure should be the same. Though, with a tube you can run a little less pressure and not have to worry about the bead seal popping off when you turn. That might give you better traction. Just be sure to keep the pressure in both tires even so the machine will go straight.
