Yeah it's odd for there flagship model? Must be something special with the engineering as it seems to throw snow a mile?

Yamaha has a special sauce which favors high exit velocity and tight stream.   Very fun to throw snow at least 35 feet away.  However, in most homeowner use, I rarely  have to exercise the full throwing distance, unless I want to take out windows, sidings, and cars.  :)  I did used it on occasion to put the snow from my sidewalk to the others side of the street.   The throwing distance comes in handy when there's a lot of snowfall and you have put the snow above a 6 foot tall berm across a 2 car wide driveway.

Do the newer yamahas use gear reduction like the older ones did? Maybe this is why only a 250cc engine is used????

Not sure what you mean, but all snowblower requires some kind of gear reduction to make the power coming the shaft usable power.

I remember reading an older post on here where somebody made reference to the older Yamahas and how the auger was driven of the cam shaft and they had lots of torque.
I'm no mechanic by any means I just assumed this was different than most blowers??

I don't know if the new Yamaha has the cam shaft output arrangement.  Seems like that is a specific engine for the purpose of a snowblower and would likely be expensive to produce since the production volume is low compared to a general purpose engine.
