Homelite 420 SS 2 stroke snow blower - Any information or opinions?
Original Message   Sep 14, 2011 7:18 am
This year I decided to get a small single stage that I could use to clear the steps & walkway that I can't reach with my 2 stage. Being the cheap bugger that I am I couldn't resist the $20 for a Homelite 420. Seems to be in decent shape, buy it wouldn't start so I'm assuming I'll have to begin with a carb clean out. Haven't had a chance to open it up yet though.
I looked around on the web & got parts diagrams but I can't find an owners manual. Anyone have any information or experience with these machines?  I've always associated Homelite with pretty good chainsaws.

Cheers

Does it have the Tecumseh 139cc two cycle engine in it?

I haven't finished going through all the documentation, including the owner's manual, but haven't found any info about the motor yet & I can't tell whose motor it is! Here are some photos of it from the web. Can you tell anything from them or where should I look for some identification?

I don't recognize it but I do know it's not anything like the Tecumseh two cycle engines I have.   Homelite made a lot of chainsaws back in the day.  That engine might be one of their larger saw engines modified for snow thrower use.   You'll have to do a bit of research.

Thanks Borat. Still waiting for a reply from the folks at Homelite as to the engine maker and date of manufacture, but I suspect it could be either a Homelite or a Jacobsen engine. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info or parts available on the web on either, so I'll start by a quick clean up and see if she starts & runs and go from there.

EDIT, Another dead end, here is the reply I just got from Homelite, "Unfortunately, there is no manufacturing data available on old vintage products of that type"  LOL, I guess by that definition I am an old vintage product (pushing 60). So these must have been made in the 60s or 70s.
