Snow blower tire size standards?
Original Message   Feb 3, 2011 8:12 am
My Ariens ST824 has some tires that need to be replaced. They are marked 4.80/4.00 x 8 & based on  my research I believe that the rim size is 8". I would like to get some sno hawgs but am a bit confused about the sizes/widths. Is there a standard for tire size marking like there is for cars? Will wider tires fit on the stock rims?

Thanks

Be wary of th sno hogs.  I've found I get better traction with ordinary tires with chains' and chains are not recommended for sho hogs.  If your olkd tires are OK, I'd just go with chains - cheaper than new tires and better traction too.

I replaced 4.10 / 3.50 - 6 turf tires with 13 x 5 x 6 snow hogs and they seem great.  A lot of people say they like the X-Trac type better.  I prefer the look of the X-Trac design, but they were more expensive and harder to find.  They are more flat / square and have more lugs on them.  I have also heard they are less bouncy than the snow hogs, but mine seem fine.  I feel the bounce when trying to bounce them, but not during normal use.

There are 2 different sizing methods on small tires.

4.10 / 3.50 - 6 = 4.1" tall sidewall, 3.5" wide, 6" rim.

13 x 5 x 6 = 13" diameter, 5" wide, 6" rim.

Just take a tape measure and measure your diameter, my guess is probably around 15".  Wider would probably help a little as long as it won't rub the chassis or stick out past the bucket.  Just make sure the rim size is the same and the total diameter is close.

Here are some pictures of mine for comparison.  Hopefully Trouts2 doesn't see this thread :)
