Snow storm!!!
Original Message   Jan 19, 2011 5:16 pm
Wowzers! Never seen a Mesoscale discussion for KC in winter before!!
N THE NEAR TERM…COLUMN HAS QUICKLY SATURATED ACROSS WRN MO/ERN KS
IN THE PRESENCE OF STRONG LIFT AND WEAK STATIC STABILITY. MODERATE
TO HEAVY SNOW CONTINUES TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND WILL YIELD
IMPRESSIVE SNOW RATES THROUGH THE BALANCE OF THE AFTERNOON. LARGE
AREA OF SLANTWISE INSTABILITY PER EQUIVALENT POTENTIAL VORTICITY
CROSS SECTIONS WILL PERSIST THROUGH 00Z…AND WARRANTS MENTION OF
ISOLATED THUNDERSNOW THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON.
SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 INCH PER HOUR CAN BE EXPECTED…SEVERELY
IMPACTING THE AFTERNOON COMMUTE.

WARM ADVECTION WILL REMAIN FOCUSED ALONG THE MISSOURI RIVER THIS
EVENING…WITH THE MOST PROLIFIC SNOW BAND BECOMING MORE WEST-EAST
ORIENTED WITH TIME AS AREA BECOMES WELL ALIGNED WITH THE RIGHT
ENTRANCE REGION TO THE DEPARTING 120 KNOT JET STREAK. MAXIMUM
VERTICAL VELOCITIES JUXTAPOSED WITHIN THE DENDRITIC -10 TO -12C
SWEET SPOT SHOULD LEAD TO FAIRLY IMPRESSIVE SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS
THROUGH THE EVENING DESPITE SURFACE TEMPERATURES IN THE TEENS.

HAVE MADE NO CHANGES TO THE WARNING/ADVISORY HEADLINES…WITH A
SOLID 6 TO 8 INCHES EXPECTED ALONG THE MISSOURI RIVER WITH LOCALLY
HIGHER AMOUNTS CERTAINLY POSSIBLE WHERE CONVECTIVE BANDING MAY OCCUR
THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING. SNOW WILL BEGIN TO TAPER FROM NW TO SE
AFTER MIDNIGHT…ENDING ACROSS CENTRAL MO BY MID MORNING THURSDAY

Yeah, please give the cliff note please.  Why do these forecast start sounding like legal papers?

It reads like a lawyer wrote it....I have'nt seen that many $ 10.00 words in quite a while! "SLANTWISE INSTABILITY PER EQUIVALENT POTENTIAL VORTICITY CROSS SECTIONS WILL PERSIST"  or better yet  "MAXIMUM VERTICAL VELOCITIES JUXTAPOSED WITHIN THE DENDRITIC -10 TO -12C SWEET SPOT" how about one more "HIGHER AMOUNTS CERTAINLY POSSIBLE WHERE CONVECTIVE BANDING MAY OCCUR". YIKES!!!!!

It doesn't sound all that complicated but they could have stated it less technically. I have a feeling that info is clearly written for pilots because most of it applies to them. The average person or even truck drivers won't care about maximum vertical velocities unless they are driving at whatever altitude was specified, ditto for convective banding. Basically it's gonna be real bumpy  if you hit any of those "sweet spots" at least that's how I understand it.

They should just tell us winds gusting to ??mph and from (insert direction/s) and the all important GEt your snowblowers out cause we are gonna get 6-8 inches baby!

"If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you live in New England."  "If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in New England."

So when I arrive in KC will I be able to get from the airport to Oklahoma Joes for an order of Burnt Ends...or will the 120 knot Jet Stream block my dinner.

Who knew "Advection" was a real word? It means "the horizontal transfer of heat or other atmospheric properties"

Don't you mean it's reversing on a parallel plane and may become static for an unknown period of time while depositing unspecified quantities of precipitation....
