Let's talk Snow Shovels
Original Message   Jan 1, 2011 10:11 pm
What's in your stash and what works....

I ended up mailordering a couple as the ones I wanted - were not available locally.

I've got a wood handle / alum. grain scoop style with 48" handle length
Wood handle, steel blade pusher - 24"
Wood handle, alum blade with steel edge shoveler
Wood handle, POLY shoveler/pusher (dedicated for IPE deck)

2nd year back in the Northeast..
Needed to used ice scraper to break EOD, and a combo of my Corona steel *garden* digging trowel to break things up......

The local poly stuff that is available just pretty much broke on me.
Blade cracked on one.
The plastic handle on the either just bent in half as I lifted a heavy wet load.....

No one seems to carry anything good with wood handles, metal and or wood D ring ends, etc so I ended up mailordering this stuff.....

I have two aluminum shovels with wooden handles. One of them is 30 years old and falling apart, 4 pop-rivets and its good for another 30. I added a 2nd aluminum about 5 years ago, end-of-season sale. This is coated in a blue non-stick surface. I had a steel "pusher", which finally rusted away, I replaced it with an aluminum one. One last tool, and ice chopper for spring when the steep driveway presents a mortal hazard to everyone. Very satisfying to chop the ice.

The blue coated aluminum blade/riveted steel edge with wooden handle by True Temper is about the best available today. I tried the ergonomic model with the bent steel handle but it weighs too much. Back in the day Electrolux made a teflon coated all aluminum model (including the handle) that was the best I ever had. It was very light and extremely robust. Unfortunately I left it on the driveway and it was backed over by a family member. I could never find another.

The only thing I can see is that Mammut makes a teflon coated snow shovel, but these are what I used to call a "Scoop" when I used to deliver coal with my dad.

i built my own using the "lawnmower style" handle from a worn out suncast scooper. then bolted it on a piece of standard board (size 12"high x 4' wide) for one pusher and the other pusher is (12"high x 6' wide)  the same style of handle, only that one was bolted on 5/8" wide chipboard. been pushing snow this way for 3 years.  no scraper bar attached just the wood edge.the wood edge normally lasts a full season. On a powder snow up to 3" i can push off my (3 car wide x 2 car deep) driveway in less than 5 min. otherwise, with deeper snow they only suppliment the snowblower as a finishing pusher, and the drive comes out like a pool table. then when the sun hits it, its dry.

15 steps punctuated by "platforms" to a front door that houses the mail slot has a tendency to peak ones' interest where shovels are concerned.
