Older John Deere 1028 Snowblower
Original Message   Oct 18, 2010 9:07 am
I have a John Deere 1028 snowblower  that is 20years old and I need parts.Where would  a guy go to get auger gear parts and drive gearbox parts also??I also require new skid pads. The 10hp Tecumseh runs fine but it wont blow snow and it doesn't move. The local small engine guy wants $350 to due the repairs but think I could do it myself cheaper. Are these older units worth spending the money to fix ??

The "drive gear" parts you need are probably just either a friction disc, belt, or adjustment.   Those should be easy to find at any small engine repair place.  Without the model number we can't tell you exactly what you need so you would have to just take the old parts with you.  The skid shoes are probably universal, just measure the distance between the bolt slots.  Most are 3 inch center to center, but some are 2" or 2.5".  If you over pay for everything that is 2 skids, 2 belts, and 1 disc at $10 each for a total of $50, but probably more like $30.

Your big problem is going to be the auger gear box if that is damaged.  Those gears can be like $80 - $100 and more for the hole assembly.  If it is bad you would be better off finding another used machine with a blown up engine for dirt cheap.

I have ordered parts from:
http://www.mfgsupply.com
http://www.jackssmallengines.com/

Other places you could check is:
http://www.amazon.com/
http://www.tractorsupply.com/
http://www.milfordpower.com/
http://www.tulsaenginewarehouse.com/

You would be best off getting the model and serial numbers off the back of the frame below the engine and getting a parts manual to look up parts.

It's pretty new... but you might want to take a look at the NEW Roller-Skid replacement skid that it just now hitting the market.  Instead of a steel or plastic skid that is designed to grind down... this gadget ROLLS.  It was originally designed to simply make the job easier, but ended up having several other important advantages.  There is a pretty nice little installation sheet that is included that does a pretty cool job of showing you how to set the scraper bar at the correct height when installing the Roller-Skids.   Because it's made of 1/4" thick 30% Glass -Filled Nylon it is extremely durable and because it ROLLS it doesn't scrape and scuff your driveway and walkway surfaces... and it won't leave rust stains on your garage floor.  Even the axles and hitch pins are made of stainless steel!  You can see a short video at https://sites.google.com/site/rollerskid/.  You can buy them at SnowBlowersDirect.com  http://www.snowblowersdirect.com/Raftery-Design-1250/p5415.html  I understand they will begin shipping around November 1st.
