lawn mower won"t start
Original Message   Jul 18, 2010 1:10 pm
I have a craftsman 6.75 horsepower, 22" rotary lawn mowerthat won't start. When i pull the starter rope the flywheel and blade just spin but won't engage. What would cause this? Could it be a bad blade adapter ?

Make sure your spark plug is clean and gapped properly. Did you do something to the mower before it stopped working? You mention a "bad blade adapter" - this should nbot have any effect on the engine not starting unless the blade is not able to spin freely. You may want to remove the blade adapter and see if the engine starts just to rule that out as a possible source of the problem.

My son was mowing the lawn and he heard somrthing start to gride up so he ran away from the mower. When he tried to start it again it wouldn't. When you pull the starting rope the flywheel and blade just keep spinning like their not making contact with anything else. What could cause there not to be any engagement with the motor?

sounds like maybe something internal and you lost compression.

I guess this is posted twice..  I think a thrown crankshaft rod...

If you can take out the plug on most engines the piston top can be seen throught the plug hole.  See it the piston is moving when the engine is slowly turned by the blade or pull rope.

moving         =       Good

not moving  =        Bad

Drain the oil see if there is any shiny chunks in the oil...

What type/ brand of engine is it?

Good luck,

Friiy
