Ariens 30" Snow Blower -- Subaru or B&S Engine?
Original Message   Feb 26, 2010 9:58 pm
I would like to hear from Ariens owners that have purchased machines with the Subaru engine. I'm going to purchase a Ariens 30" Snow Blower with a B&S or a Subaru engine later this year when they are back in stock. Any thoughts about Subaru vs Briggs and Stratton?   Thanks.

Picture of my Ariens 1128 that I just sold.

I don't think one needs to be familiar with Ariens machines to know whether certain engines are better than others. I wouldn't have any concerns with either the Subaru or B&S engines. Subaru/Robins make a fine engine and B&S ohv engines seem to be well made also. I have a B&S 305cc engine on my Simplicity and, to be honest, I'm impressed with it. If you have a choice, I'd go with the best price between the two. If they're the same price, I'd probably go with the Subaru. Why? Just because it's different.

I believe that the stock SX30 Subaru runs at 4000 RPMs while the stock 1450 Series B&S runs at 3600 RPMs.  If that translates to a difference in performance then I'd go with the Subaru.

The Subaru SX30 looks like a winner! You are correct Paul, 4000 RPMs.
