A zerk fitting is where a grease gun is used to grease a part. A shear pin is used to protect the unit from damage if something is caught in the rotating blades, like a rug, newspaper ,chain or whatever. The pin breaks and stops the auger from rotating. Shear pins or bolts are a softer grade of steel. If your machine is like my Toro 824 there are holes at each end of the drum auger, inside you will see a bolt and nut. These are shear bolts, even though Toro claims they dont used shear bolts. Make sure you disconnect the spark plug wire before turning the auger.
Thank you very much for your answer I have been going over diagrams on otto paap parts tree & power x just to name a few & see the bolts u are talking about but when I scan down they are not called shear pins.
I guess u are talking about holes in the what I call drum (auger) in there I can see bolts.
Now I need to ask a stupid question as I caught a chain in mine one night & it shut down the whole snow thrower but after about a half hour of prying the chain out she started right back up & I did the rest of the driveway. So my question is should not of these shear pins broke?. And if the shear pin breaks I would think the auger would not turn until replaced?.
But after doing all the work I had to do with her the other day I went out & auger worked fine although I don't think it's throwing it far but I think the belt is bad. So would the auger still throw snow if the shear pin broke?.
Thank you,
Will,
