Carb Soak Question
Original Message   Jan 14, 2010 5:51 pm
I have a  Craftsman single stage snow blower which has been sitting for three years now unused with gas in tank. As you can imagine there is plenty of varnish in carb. So I did dismount the gas tank and cleaned it out  along with the fuel line . Thats the easy part. My question is what do I soak my carb in to losen up the varnish and crud build up ? By the way I ordered a carb kit which includes needle valve,VITON seat and bowl gasket.

I’ve been using Berrymans at Autozone ($20) and also NAPA's branded solvent ($20), double dipping usually for 12 hours minimum in each tank.   I used to use Berrymans alone but added a dip in NAPA just for good measure.  I’ve used each alone but can’t say one is better than the other, both seem to work the same and fine.  The can dips come with baskets.

I sometimes also run them through an ultrasonic bath also but I’m loosing my confidence in it.  The can dips have been excellent but I still clean again with carb spray and high pressure air wash after the dip and carb spray wash.

For really bad varnish I’d pull the welch plug.

You could leave a bit in the bowl and whatever you do to the carb body do to the bowl to see how effective the solvents were.

Kudos as well. I love this site! I tried your double-dip on a carb from an old generator that hasn't puffed in two years. It was soaked in Gumout for 48 hours before that, without results. I'll be damned! I now have a reliable 5KW backup to run my pump, furnace, and beer fridge. I owe you one, buddy!
