Not sure about this exact machine or availability but some gear sets can be quite expensive. I was in a shop last Friday and a guy was discussing replacement of an Auger gear set with the owner. He used a bolt instead of a shearpin and ate a newspaper. $294 for the parts without the labor. I heard the dealer tell him the gears are sold in sets because they have to be replaced as a set. That price was for the parts without replacing the cast iron gear box which was undamaged.Obviously it pays for you to check the price of the parts before buying the machine. Marc

What is the factory model number off the back base of the machine? Can’t tell from the picture if it’s aluminum or cast gearbox but seems to be aluminum. Ariens is not sourcing any aluminum gearbox parts for the 924 other than as a complete assembly which goes for 190 and up depending on the dealer pricing. You could get lucky and find some old stock at a dealer. Chances are good you may just have a sheared pin on the gear and a cheap fix if broken. Yes, the gear slips off the shaft. There are gears around you can buy if the gear is broken. The factory recommends changing both the shaft worm and the worm gear as a set (before they stopped sourcing them) I have heard because of wear but not positive. That would not bother me. I have purchased a spare gear and would use it.

Kdez, thanks for the manual, did I miss it or are there no part number lists (descriptions) to go with the numbered diagrams? I see it is available on the Ariens website, but I like to have hard copies for reference. Thanks

Go to ariens.com and look up your serial and model number on the parts radar. I would recommend replacing the entire gearbox and to not just try and rebuild it. Chances are you have other worn parts in there which could cause it to fail again. If you do decide to rebuild it, look at all the parts in there and if any show signs of wear, replace them as well. You will have to also replace the oil seals on each side of the auger shaft. Don't forget to replace the oil seal on the shaft that goes to the impeller. The seals are very thin so be sure not to cut them when you slide them onto the shaft. If they tear they will leak. That is why I suggest replacing the entire assembly. The auger shaft rusts and becomes pitted which makes it very diffucult to replace the oil seals without damaging them. Let me know how it goes.

The seals can be installed on a buffed out shaft if you use a seal protector or a piece of old micrfiche as a protector..... Also sometime a better seal can be installed than the unit came with, A good industrial bearing supply house can fix you up with "very good seals" if you can show them the old one.. ....Just something you may want to try.. Good Luck, Friiy
