Shear bolts on Ariens 824
Original Message   Jan 23, 2005 7:01 pm
Hi guys, even though I had my snowblower for 2 years I never had to change a shear bolt until now, It seem that part of the bolt is stuck and hard as I try I cant get it out.I brought a metal drill bit and see if I can bore out, unless you gentlemen have a better suggestion, thank you,Calogero.

Hi and welcome to the OPE forum...

Get some oil on  the broken bolt... preferably a penetrating type oil...

I'd try to knock it out... using a hammer & punch... or stiff nail... screwdriver... another shear bolt... or whatever...

...while ensuring the shear bolt hole is lined up in the outter auger shaft...

On a previous snowblower...  I recall drilling the outer auger shaft's shear bolt holes just a little larger to make it easier to
knock out the broken shear bolt piece...

Dave...

Whether you think you can or you can't... you're right.

I keep mine religously greased, so I just pounded mine out with the new shear pin.  The anxillary benefit of doing that is that the old pin as it comes out helps keep the auger centered as the new one goes in.  BUT, i had a very very clean shear.  Be sure you don't over tighten the new pin, or it won't shear right the next time.
