ok.  My buddy had a tecumseh oh195sa that is listed as a replacement engine for the ariens 924038.  the chute crank has a universal joint in the middle.  the heater box that covers the carb is pretty big and forces a modification of the chute crank.  can't go under the heater box due to the angle. . .anyone do this already?  THinking about mounting the engine higher  and using longer belts?  I would love to hear ideas.

Below are some mods for 924 series.  I think the 038 goes wide to the outside off an eyebolt standoff to the outside on the handlebar.  The bracket is made similar to a standard one on page 14 of the 924050 parts breakdown on the Ariens stie.   Brackets are pretty easy to make up from flat stock at any hardware store.  All you need is a hammer, vice, drill and sawzall.  Going under is generally easier than to the side.  You can make the bracket longer or shorter and bend it for more clearance.  The standard eyebolts used on handlebars or cross bars can be moved or longer/shorter ones added.  The lengts of the shafts can also be changed along with adding another universal if needed.  Changing lengths changes the position of cotter pin holes so redrill above a moved eyebolt to support sloppy movements and reduce play.

        I have welded in  another universal joint (from a 1/4 inch drive cheap socket set) to change the routing of the crankrod...   Or you could swap out the crank rod with a telefex cable from a curved shaft line trimmer...   Just ideas.....   (I bet I have Trouts2 thinking now)

   Over the last several months I’ve picked up a number of junks so loaded with universals.  The dealer up the street was a gold mine for parts.  I got about 25 recoils from his junkers.  He has unfortunately gone out of business. 

 

   What turned up after snooping around for Teleflex were choke cables with T handles.  Interesting.  I’ve been looking for cables that are thick for snowblower hood controls without requiring springs. 

 

  Don’t know much about wackers.  Are you thinking of using the lower end to turn the spiral chute worm?

No, Trouts...  Inside the curved shaft of a line trimmer is a cable that (like a speedo cable in a car, but much larger) flexs and spins at hi rpm to turn the cutting head.  It is very strong and very flexable..

   I've only looked at a few and at the engine side.  They seemed very flexable but strong.   Maybe they could be used with the shaft and cable together.  Remove the engine and head and attach the head end to the worm and the other to the dash with a crank.  ??  I'll have to pickup a junker and take a look.
