Old 8/24 freebie...
Original Message   Sep 24, 2009 6:23 am
Hi all,

I was given an old Mastercraft (Cdn Tire) 8/24. The owner gave it to me because the engine was seized. I went to remove the pulleys, and the old Tecumseh wasn't seized at all. I got it running well enough within a few minutes, and I'll use it as a back up to my old Bolens.

The front gear case is completely sealed. It's a (sort of) clam shaped unit with no drain plug, no way to feed fluid in, or any grease nipple. I know my old Bolens well enough, but this is new to me. Are these things supposedly maintenance free? Can I crack it open and put the grease to it?

Thanks!

John

If the unit looks like it's maintenance free, I wouldn't mess with it. Go on line to see if you can find info on it. If it works and does not appear damaged or leaking, concentrate on other aspects of the machines (belts, levers/linkages, wheels/axles, auger/impeller, chute/deflector etc).
