Hi all.I got me a Noma. It will not go foward in any gear,and it hardly goes backwards.When i push down on the handle to make it go,the cable comes up and there is a screw on it.If i adjust that screw will it make a difference,or could it be the friction wheel?Thanks,Don

A quick test is to pull the cable attached to the traction clutch, if the unit starts to move then its a cable adjustment. There is a threaded rod at the bottom end of the cable. Its generally inside a spring. You detach the cable from the control lever at the operator position, push the cable down into the spring and the other end comes out. Tighten the nut a few turns and then reattach and test again. The last time I did it I had to tighten about 5 turns.

If its the friction wheel then you might need a manual since you would have to open up the traction unit.

I did the cable check,no luck.Where would i find a manual?It's a Noma model,N826DEL-1 serial number is 501596   5054

Don't know of a specific manual. I have a Sears Noma blower and I think you can get a manual from Sears, give them a call. There might also be manuals from other manufacturers for a blower of the same size that are downloadable. If so the friction wheel/disk is pretty common so the basic replacement procedure will be similar. If you go to a L&G with the make and model they might be able to help as well.

If you want to have a look at it you do the following:
  1. Make sure blower is off, including disconnect the spark plug;
  2. If the gas tank is full syphon out a bunch of gas;
  3. Tighten gas tank cap;
  4. Put blower into the "service position", up on the auger housing, looks like you are going to China;
  5. There are two plates held on by machine screws, one is on the bottom, the other is at the back of the traction unit near the bottom. Remove the one at the back;
  6. Inside you will see some gears, a chain, a disk and a wheel with some hard rubber on it. The rubber wheel should press against the disk when you hold the traction clutch down;
  7. Close it up when you are done.
The friction disk is supposed to be clean and dry, no grease, oil or water. The same is true for the friction wheel. The cable is supposed to be adjusted so the wheel is pressing against the disk when the traction clutch is engaged. As you move the speed control the friction wheel will change its contact position on the disk. The closer to the centre, the slower the blower moves. If the disk goes past the centre the blower changes direction.

I did as you said,when i hold the lever in,the friction disc is tight against the plate.the disc and plate are both dry and clean.If the wheel is bad,dont you think that it would move when its supposed to be engaged?

I think the disk is connected to the engine via gears and chains and the friction wheel connects to the drive wheels. If that is so then when you turn the wheels by hand the friction wheel should turn. If you then engage the traction clutch the wheels should be close to impossible to turn since you are trying to turnover the engine. If they turn and both the friction wheel and disk turn then the problem is further along the drive train towards the engine. If only the friction wheel turns then its slipping. The most usual suspect is the friction wheel since it is the one that get the most abuse but I have heard of other stuff happening, such as the drive chain coming off. I'm not familiar with the differential or remote trigger units so I can't advise there. I think your unit has a pin lock system.

A light just went on, did you check to make sure both wheel lock pins are in place and working. The wheels aren't spinning on the axle?

It's all done.It was the friction wheel.We are supposed to get dumped on this afternoon,and the old man who owns the noma was calling me at 7 this morning to get it done.I don't like working on things without a manual.But what are you going to do with a impatient old man?Thanks for your help.Don
