924050 auger always turns
Original Message   Feb 5, 2009 9:49 pm
the auger on my 924050 (sn: 036561) always spins.  Clutch engaged, not engaged, always spins.  It just came back from having a new auger pulley installed, and it still always spins.  (the new pulley was because there was play in the pulley and i was throwing belts, not because of the spinning).  Any suggestions for a course of treatment?

I am careful with it and never leave it unattended, but the thing should work the way it was designed. . .

Dan

Sounds like belt is too tight. Check idler pulley.

The auger belt is to tight and is always engaged.

As stated in the previous post the first suspicion is that the idler wheel should be adjusted so that the belt is looser. The other possibility that comes to mind is that you have the wrong belt and it is too tight no matter what you do with the idler. I hope its the first option.

It could easily be the tensioner is too tight.  It could be from a new  belt install and not backing off the tensioner.

Many older machines have the same issue.  There is a brake pad which is pulled off the pulley when the auger clutch lever is pulled down.  When the lever is released the brake pad is pull onto the pulley by a spring to stop auger rotation.   Most older machines have pads that are glazed over, deep wear grooves from the pulley, or springs that pull the break in are worn.
