Hi there, cleaned out my parents garage and came across an old snowblower, probably 20 years old. Its a Toro 5hp, 24",electric start, 4 stroke, all red. Could not get a model # off the engine. Want to fire it up, however don't have oil capacity or specs for a replacement plug. Looking for a manual or info to start this process. Appreciate any advice.

Drain the oil and see how much you get out. Then put that much oil back in to start with and then check the oil level. My 28 year-old Toro used less than a quart of 5w30 and so do the new ones, so I would recommend 5w30 synthetic motor oil such as Mobil 1. Also check to make sure there’s oil in the auger gear box. If you need to add oil you will need oil for that application. I used 75w-90 Mobil synthetic gear lube in my old Toro. Check to see if there’s any gas in the tank. If so, and if you don’t know how long it’s been in there, I would recommend draining it out. If there’s no gas in the tank, check the gas line to make sure it looks ok and then add just a bit of gas and look for leaks. If ok, add enough so there’s a inch of gas in the tank. The ideas is to test the tank, line and carberator for leaks before you fill up the tank. If there’s a spark plug in the machine then try starting it. The plug might be fine. Mac

To get a manul for your Toro 521, which is what I think it is, go to this web page. Put 38052 in the "Enter Model number" box and click SEARCH, then click on the year you think the machine was made in. Next click Manuals in the Get More Information menu. Click on the Operator Manual [ English ] link to download the manul as a PDF. Save it to your hard dirve so you will have it in the future.

Thanks for all the suggestions & advice. I did find the correct yr & model, 1977 524 model. MacLorry27, I tried downloading the manual without success, that said any suggestions where a no-charge one is available. Thanks all, |
