I read that ariens friction disc can shifted on the fly.Is that true and can the others also be shifted on the fly from toro ,simplicity etc.

Yes, you can shift on the fly, but I was told by a guy who works on snow blowers that it is better to stop and then shift, simply to avoid excessvie wear on the rubber tread that is on one of the two discs.  Other than that, there is nothing mechanically wrong with shifting on the fly.  You do NOT want to go from forward to reverse, and vice versa.  That could cause harm to your system.
