I went to a Briggs factory class once about 15 years ago, at the class they had a 3.5 horz. engine running on propane. The engine had a glass window on the head and you could see it run.. the magneto was on a ajustable plate to advance and retard the engine. The neat part was the fact you could see the effect of the advance and retard on the running temp of the valves and piston top ( you could watch it ping). with the stobe you could almost watch a the engine as if it was a picture of conditions. The flame of the combustion was hardly visable.
