Need to replace 12.5 x 4.5 - 6 tires on Ariens 10M7D
Original Message   Dec 20, 2007 3:04 pm
I have a well-used Ariens 10M7D that I recently purchased.  The tires look to be original equipment which would make them almost 40 years old at this point.  They still hold air but the cracks in the tread are a concern and I know that there have been some advances in traction technology since the late '60s.

I'd like to put on some X-Trac tires but they don't seem to have the 12.5 x 4.5 - 6 size.  Anybody here dealt with this issue?  I'd appreciate some advice on the proper replacement size.

Thanks.

I already scoured the Carlisle website and I see no mention of tire size compatibility.  Is there something I missed?

Check out X trac tires, 13 x 5 x 6 or  13 x 4 x 6 should fit !  !

If in doubt, call them and ask!

Thanks for your help.  I have one more question.

I've been operating under the assumption that Ariens has always used tubeless tires but I realized that many not be the case.  Short of removing the old tire, is there an easy way to figure out whether the wheel can be used without an inner tube?  If Ariens never used inner tubes then I should be all set.

I recently had a problem with a leaking tire and was going to use it as an excuse to get some new x-tracs. The dealer said that the normal reason for leaks was corroded rims and that all you had to do was put a tube inside the "tubeless" tire.

Worked for me.

Figured I'd update this in case anybody else has this question. I ended up getting X-Trac tires. Carlisle recommended the 13 x 5 x 6.

The wheels were one-piece so I had the pleasure of fighting with the tires for far too long but I was successful in getting them on eventually.

I went with inner tubes because of the rim corrosion issue and since the previous tires used them.

Went out right after and got some nice traction on yesterday's snowfall. Overall, it was a success but I would just pay somebody with the proper mounting machine to do it next time.
