Tired Ariens 8hp/24 1995
Original Message   Dec 5, 2007 12:02 pm
I don't have the exact model number handy, but it is the 8/24 from 1995 that a high end power equipment dealer would sell. I.E., not from home cheapo.
I live north of Syracuse, and get HAMMERED with snow. After 12 or 13 years, the engine is getting tired. It is funny, after using it, when shutting it down, I set it to idle, and turn the key off. While it is spooling down, I can pull my glove off, and point my finger at it and pull a "trigger". Bamm. Every time it shuts off, and comes to a complete stop, it backfires. (Exhaust valve?) Every time. Stop. Bang. It is a hard starter also, which is ok for mee, but my wife has drawn a bullseye on it.
Anyway, I have done maintenance every year, lube, etc. New friction wheel in last year.
So.... Is there a plug and play more powerful engine that I can bolt on? By bolt on, I mean just that, no drilling, futzing with pullies, etc. Maybe a ohv? I hit the small engine warehouse site, but don't know what I really need.

Thanks!

Is it a 358 CC Tec or a 318CC engine?

If you do not know, call Tecumseh, give them the Serial and Spec numbers, they can tell you what you have!

If you have the 318CC. Tec has an OHV that  comes in 8 to 11.5 HP!

I have the Tec 11.5 OHV Engine, plenty of power!!!

If you have the 358 then your best bet is an 10.5 L head or 13 HP  OHV.

Which ever you have, either is a direct bolt on as long as Shaft diameter and Shaft Length are the same, with no mods to your blower!! IMHO

Tec makes so many engines it's possible they have a more powerful one of  identical size I guess, but the geometry may have changed since 1995. First thing to do is find your engine model# (not the snowblower's, just the engine) and then compare shapes with new ones.

Well, I went looking for a replacement HSKM80 engine, and cameup with a short block for $340 or complete $500. Although the blower is in great shape, I elected to whip out the credit card and bought a Simplicity pro model with 10.5 B&S on it.  I need something ultra reliable for my wife when I am out of town.

Check out this place.  They have an excellent selection of engines with diagrams of bolt patterns, spacers required to fit Tec to B&S  installation or vice versa.  You can also e-mail them for information.  They reply quickly and seem good to deal with.  www.smallenginewarehouse.com

Went there. No joy. They did not have an engine. I could get one locally. I am just going to sell it as is, and move on. The main reason I was concerned was reliability when I am out of town, and SWMBO had to use it. I can always start it, but SHe has trouble with it. Those new B&S engines sure seem to start nice.
