old ariens blower help needed
Original Message   Mar 2, 2007 5:12 pm
I have an older Ariens blower I received for free. It wouldn't start so I took the carb off and found old gas had gummed it up. I bought a rebuild kit to start with but have never done this before. Where can I get photos of the carb and some details on what to remove and replace? I looked on the Ariens website and found I can't download the manuals there....must be too old. Would the library have a good book that would help?

How can I determine what year this blower is from? The model # is 922024. The engine # is HS50-67008A.

Any help appreciated!

Bacon, to download manual from ariens you need the model number its probaly stick on the friction wheel case at top right. You'll be able to get manual. When you rebuilt the carb, to pull out the needle seats you can use a wood screw (round head) enough long 1 5/8 inch gauge(6). To put back in the new seat use the head of the screw push back in straight and slowly until in gets to the bottom. If the inside of the fuel bowl can not be clean with strong solvent, I recommend to use a drimmel with a thin brass brush It will certainly work good. Dont touch the float. Make sure the needle is clean too. Add new spark plug, you may check gap point too sometimes just cleaning them with fine 220 sand paper. Check your gas cap from preventing vent hole for obstruction.

Good Luck

I have the model #922024 but when I put this in the website, it says it is not available for download. I was able to rebuild the carb with new needles, float, o-rings, bowel, etc. from a kit. I also am putting on new fuel line and in-line fuel filter. Getting the welch plugs out and putting the new ones in was a bit of a challenge but I did it. I slowely drilled a hole in the plug and then threaded a fine thread machine screw into the hole. I then was able to pull the plug out. I was not so lucky on the smaller plug but gently pried it out with a small screw driver. I soaked the whole carb in carb cleaner over night and it turned out very clean.

Tomorrow I will put the carb back on and see if it will fire up. Thanks for the advice.

Go to the Ariens site here and click on the Parts Radar button. You can then put in you model number and some illustrated parts lists will be available. It also looks like you can order parts through them. The window that comes up has a bunch of "buttons" on the top with "Universal" symbols so that nobody will know what they do but you might be able to get a print out if you experiment you might find something interesting. I wasn't able to find a downloadable owner's manual but it just might be a matter of looking around some more.

You could also try contacting their tech support. If you are lucky with the older models they may not put them online until they have a query.

Well I put the carb back in and added a fuel shut off and filter. I got fuel to the carb and then saw the bowl leaking. It was coming from the drain on the bottom. I took the bowl off and saw a defect in the metal next to the drain screw. I will have to take it back for a new one.....just my luck as it was a new bowl.

I was able to get the fuel to slow to a drip, drip and gave a pull on the start cord. Nothing after several pulls. I checked the plug and it is getting spark. I don't smell gas on the plug or in the cylinder though. Any suggestions on what to try next? I turned both screws on the carb all the way in and then backed them off 1.5 turns out.

I also found the bottom of the on/off keyed switch broken. The wires are attached to a small "circuit like board" under the key assembly. This "board" came off and won't reattach. Would this cause the motor to not start....making it think it's in the off position? I don't think this is the case as there is spark to the plug but any other opinions?

Thanks in advance.

I believe the ignition switch simply shorts out the spark plug when the key is out. When the plastic key goes in it interupts the circuit shorting out the plug. Since you are getting spark that means the electrical system is probably OK. You could try a couple of drops of gas through spark plug hole, reinstall the plug and crank it over to see if it catches.

I think you are on the right track with the carburetor.
