i have an older model sears snowblower and the engine is a 7hp and really old i have a tecumseh 8hp engine will it fit on the sears frame because its coming off a yard machines snowblower built by mtd. i don't no wat type of engine the 7hp is i believe its a tecumseh too but i don't know if i can take the 7hp off and bolt the 8hp on too it. i need some major help
I did an engine swap 2 years ago. Old Tecumseh 9.5HP blew up so I put on a B&S Intek Snow 11HP. The chassis was already drilled for both bolt patterns, I could have either bought a mounting plate or drilled my own. Instead I cut the original mounting plate into four pieces that I moved to the appropriate locations.
Things to watch for:
Its best if the height from the base of the motor to the centre of the motor shaft is the same as the old motor;
The diameter of the shaft should be the same as the old shaft unless you want to get new pulleys;
Pull the old engine first to check for the bolt patterns; and
The diagrams available from the B&S web site are a little weird. As near as I can figure they used a CAD program, entered in English units ( such as 3/16"), converted to decimal (0.1875") and then rounded to 3 decimals (0.188") and printed to 4 decimals ( 0.1880") thereby giving wrong answers and no indication of what really happened.
I have been very pleased with the new engine, I have more power to grind through the snow and get it thrown. I don't know if its a Tecumseh vs B&S, OHV vs L-head or New vs Old thing but I am satisfied with the results.
I would guess its the OHV that makes the difference. I've also read that the OHVs are quieter. I always wear ear muffs and sometime have plugs in as well and they all sound the same to me .
