Craftsman Snowblower model #536.887250 5.5 horsepower
Original Message   Jan 16, 2007 6:05 pm
This is the third season with this snowblower, today was our really first snowfall of the season.,Cleveland Ohio, 6 plus inches. Went into the garage baby fired right up, my problem
is it don't matter what forward speed I'm in the thrower will just PUSH the pile then will catch up and try to purge it all at once!! Last year I tried the floor wax(no luck)
this year I waxed the housing and the impeller and today sprayed it all with silicon, it still pushes the pile. It was looked at by Sears last year and they said there
is nothing wrong with it. A few weeks back I had a friend of the family look at it also and he couldn't see why it would not throw the snow. He did state that the
2 stage snowthrowers are not as good as throwing snow as a single stage. Should I just kick this one to the curb and by a Ariens? Any info or ideas is greatly appreciated.....

Mike

It does not sound right. Are you sure the augers are moving with the gear box because it sounds like only the impeller is really doing the work.
#1 disconnect the spark plug wire and then try the following:Check to see if you can turn the augers by hand freely. Are there shear pins or are they missing.Maybe your gear box is broken and its not putting out to the augers.
#2 Possibly the belt or your cable needs to be adjusted..Its going to be in that area I just explained.Let us know what you find.<BR>Allan

Sorry it took this long to get back, The Auger does not move freely, that rules out the shear pins.
Also everything turns, auger and impeller. Today we had some more snow and it again even
as I fully adjusted the idler pulley completely in, the machine still pushed the pile, it's like it don't
flow easily into the machine, yes it was a little wet. In the manual they give with the machine with
the idler pulley engaged it states you should only have a 1/2 inch deflection on the belt.
Well I adjusted the pulley all the way up and it seems that there still seems to be more than
the 1/2" play in the belt. So how long should a belt last ?
This machine is now 4 years old, all original belts. If I need to replace the belt , the manual shows
that all you have to do is remove the belt cover and the bottom plate and slide the old belt off and
put the new one on. It don't look that way to me !!!!! I'm somewhat mechanical so I'd give it a go...

Thanks.

All I did was tighten it as best as it could be, everything turns fine, yesterday and today we've had quite measureable snow
6" yesterday, and today about 4". Being soo cold hardly any water content to the snow, and this blower is just throwing it
15-20 feet. My guess is that when the snow thickens up(water content) it has the problem. As in the belt, do I have to split
my machine to replace the belt ? that's what it looks to me, even though the manual(and we know manuals) is pretty unclear
as to changing the belt other than stating removing a couple of covers and sliding the belt off/on......
